Vivo Energy Kenya uses Lubricants Blending Plant to produce 350,000 litres of free hand sanitizers

When COVID-19 struck Kenya, sanitizers were on high demand leading to their prices shooting up. The government had to intervene with the free hand sanitizers initiative so as to help the most exposed Kenyans who cannot afford them. Vivo Energy Kenya repurposed its Lubes Blending Plant in Shimanzi, Mombasa to produce 350,000 litres of free hand sanitizers for the government. The sanitizers were packed in 700,000 bottles.

The government provided the Company with the raw materials amongst them ethanol with an alcohol content of 96%. The blending of the sanitizers followed the recommended ratio as guided by the Ministry of Health and the Kenya Bureau of Standards guidelines.

In March 2020, Vivo Energy Kenya, in partnership with the Government of Kenya, produced 250,000 litres of sanitizers which were packed in 500,000 bottles. In June 2020, the Company boosted its contribution with an additional 100,000 litres which were packed in 200,000 bottles. The sanitizers were distributed to Kenyans for free by Kenya Pipeline Company, using various arms of national and county governments.

The second batch of 100,000 litres were handed over to the Principal Secretary, State Department of Petroleum, Ministry of Petroleum and Mining, Mr. Andrew Kamau by Vivo Energy Kenya Managing Director, Mr. Peter Murungi.

Vivo Energy Kenya is honoured to be one of the free hand sanitizers producers in the country and this noble initiative is helping complement the government’s effort in curbing the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
